Wednesday, September 20th, 2006When I installed Textmate the first thing that I missed was the FTP support found in competing text editors. I spent some time playing around with rsync, tried to use finder to mount the folder I was working on and use it as a project and I tried using the sync tool found in Transmit. None of these solutions were as smooth as I would have liked them to be. Many people seemed to be making the same complaint, but the solution was harder to come by.
- Install Textmate and Transmit. I thought they were worth purchasing, but that’s up to you. Following the Textmate set up instructions is a good place to start. Make sure that you get all your bundles up to date.
- Activate the Transmit bundle. This comes with 3 commands: DockSend File, DockSend folder and Send File with Active Transmit Connection.
- Set up a site in Transmit. This is straightforward. Make sure that in editing the site you have a local folder and have checked the “Use DockSend” box. I had been avoiding this setting because it seemed to me that since I have multiple sites to edit, DockSend wouldn’t do me much good. Transmit is smarter than that though. It will check to see where the file is being DockSent from and determines which site you are talking about.
- The final step is to remap the keys in Textmate to something unique so that one key press does the DockSend. I mapped mine to command-shift-u for upload file and command-shift-option-u for upload folder. If Transmit isn’t open, it will open. If you have Growl set up you’ll get a notification.
Now I can edit files in a project window quickly on my local machine and upload them to the site they belong to in a key press. Good Luck.
