My Favorite Videos
Sunday, February 19th, 2006YouTube has made it possible to share some of my favorite videos ever. These are my favorite music videos that I can think of at the moment that are up on YouTube.
Yo La Tengo - Sugarcube
This is more an episode of Mr. Show than a music video but it’s also genius. “Do you like trip-hop?”
The Replacements - Bastards of Young
Anti-videos make the best videos, and this is the best anti-video of all time.
Aphex Twin - Windowlicker
Throw this in the anti-video department as well. This is some of Cunningham’s creepiest work ever here, and that’s really saying something. This video lampoons the type of video that was ripe for lampooning at the time, and beautifully. This is what a smart rap video looks like (except the intro, which is rather pointless).
Chemical Brothers - Let Forever Be
White Stripes - Denial Twist
Gondry. ‘Nuff said. I could link everything else he’s done, but you should just buy the DVD if you still haven’t. Denial Twist isn’t on it.
Funkstorung - Grammy Winners
Designers Republic, but moving!
Paul McCartney - Coming Up
I was just shown this. I’m now obsessed with it.
Eno & Byrne - America Is Waiting
This matches the music perfectly. Usage of stock video is a hard thing to pull off right. This video does it right.
Devo - Satisfaction
Devo - Girl U Want
Devo - Jocko Homo
Devo - RU Experienced
Devo make the best music videos ever. Satisfaction and Girl U Want I could watch over and over again. R U Experience and Jocko Homo didn’t make the DVD release for some reason. There’s a lot more where that came from.
Cat Power - Crossbones Style
I don’t know why but this video just sticks with me. Probably because Chan Marshall is hot as hell. On rollerskates! Probably her best song as well.
Cornelius - Drop
The visuals on Cornelius’ stuff is always amazing. He needs to come out with a new album soon.
These are not technically music videos per se, but are worth watching:
Miles Davis & John Coltrane - So What
Clip from Une Femme est Une Femme
Os Mutantes - Panis En Circenses
Some videos I couldn’t find (to search later):
Talking Heads - (Nothing but) Flowers, Tibor Kalman did it apparently and it’s heavy on typography.
Some Gong video I saw on VH1 classic at 4 in the morning one time where they’re wearing masks and basically freaking the fuck out.
The Sonic Youth video that Lee directed.
Lady in the Radiator song from Eraserhead.
That’s all I’ve got right now. Post ‘em if you’ve got ‘em.
